Local Government Reorganisation - Potential Residents Poll pdf icon PDF 409 KB

This matter is the responsibility of the Leader of the Council, Cllr Smith-Roberts.

This report recommends the holding of a local referendum to give residents a voice in the debate and help the Secretary of State in understanding and determining the level of support amongst residents for each of the options.

    Additional documents:

    Minutes:

The Leader of the Council made the following statement:-

In light of the Secretary of State’s letter received on the evening of the 12th of April 2021 and the specific and detailed legal issues raised therein, it was necessary to obtain further legal advice by means of leading counsel’s opinion to ensure members had full and thorough legal advice when reaching their decision on such a significant issue. Therefore in relation to the proposed Council decisions to hold a Local Referendum on the proposals for local government reorganisation in Somerset the item had been withdrawn at this time and the meeting would be re-arranged to a future date to consider the matter further with the benefit of specific legal advice.
